Symposium to Explore Role of Supercomputers in Life Sciences
On October 20, an international workshop in Tokyo will feature presentations on the current state of the use of supercomputers in the area of life science. Topics will include molecular dynamics simulations, use of the GROMACS application, focusing on its use for antibody drug development, simulations of brain circuits, and biomedical big data analysis, focusing on the use of supercomputers for cancer research.
On the following day, there will be a public symposium, in Japanese, to present some of these topics to people with an interest in the latest research achievements and other activities in the life sciences using the K computer.
The symposium is being organized by the Strategic Programs for Innovative Research Field 1, “Supercomputational Life Science” (SCLS), a RIKEN-led program funded by MEXT which aims to expand the scope of computational life science toward medical care and drug discovery.
Using the K computer—which is currently the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world—its members have integrated knowledge from dynamic multiscale life systems, consisting of the genome, molecules, cells, organs, and human body, to promote progress in understanding life systems. New ACE-Inhibiting Molecule Found in Asparagus
Humans have long taken note of the possible blood-pressure-lowering effects of asparagus. Going back into antiquity, it is claimed even that Egypt’s Pharaoh Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti called asparagus a “food of the gods.” Now, on a more scientific note, scientists have determined that sulfur-containing compounds in plants can inhibit ACE, an enzyme known to contribute to hypertension.
In research published in the Journal of Natural Products, a group of scientists from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science, along with colleagues from Chiba University, have used a field they are pioneering—targeted metabolomics—to identify a new ACE-inhibiting molecule in the asparagus, which they dubbed asparaptine.
To identify the molecule, the group used mass spectrometry—a technique that involves scanning compounds to find the molecules contained within them—and looked specifically for different molecules containing sulfur. They identified several and then screened them to test their effectiveness in inhibiting ACE. The new compound they found in asparagus spears—asparaptine—turns out to have a very high effectiveness.
According to Ryo Nakabayashi, the first author of the study, “Sulfur-containing compounds have been reported to have a range of benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-cancer effects, and we are happy to have been able to use targeted metabolomics to find this new important compound.
We will be able to use this efficient method to find new substances and to help get a better understanding of what plant compounds can have a positive effect on human health. We also look forward to learning more about the biological role that asparaptine plays in the asparagus. Click to Read More |

Animated Short Films Based on Research Results Published on YouTube
JST created a series of animated short films titled Nippon Future Stories to introduce the fun of basic research. These films are fictional and comically illustrate the future that might come true from the practical application of findings achieved in the ERATO (Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology) program. Each film is about four minutes long and is available on the YouTube Miraikan Channel.
You can also enjoy the films in the communication lobby on the first floor of the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) with the exhibit panel and the film explaining related studies. Click to Read More
